ARIES  (March 21 – April 19)

“Some of us are becoming the men we wanted to marry.”    — Gloria Steinem

The symbol for Aries suggests the ram’s horns, or a plant shooting up from the earth. In its journey through the zodiac, Aries is the first of the 12 signs (just as well because they couldn’t bear to be second!) The image of a plant shooting up from the earth signifies the individual emerging from collective darkness, full of the joys of Spring, and ready for the adventures of life. Curiously, you’ll often identify an Aries female by her high arched brows similar to the image of a ram’s horns. A perfect example of what I mean is the late great Bette Davis.

Aries is a masculine, cardinal, fire, sign. Ruled by Mars, these Divas have a superabundance of energy and drive. As a Fire sign, they can be pretty feisty! You don’t mess with Ms. Aries, and you certainly don’t fence her in! She values her space and independence. Being such a strong formidable character, she often marries men who are weaker and more compliant. She can be impulsive in love, which is why the Aries female divorce rate is high.

Ms. Aries is tireless in pursuit of her goals and undeterred by obstacles. Similar to Taurus, she has a stubborn determined nature. Ruled by the head, she is frequently accused of being headstrong. The head is a sensitive area for Aries, so she should always wear head protection when playing dangerous sports.

Concerned with objectives and the big picture, Ms. Aries gets mighty impatient with small details and does not suffer fools gladly! Her motto in life is ‘Actions speak louder than words’. Another one she likes is ‘The harder I work, the luckier I get’.

Words to describe the Aries happy side are:

Assertive, Bold, Energetic, Honest, Confident, Enterprising, Generous, Impulsive, Ambitious, Adventurous, Initiating, Organizing, and Responsible.

And the Shadow side, because we all have one!

Aggressive, Argumentative, Boastful, Bossy, Egotistical, Hasty, Impatient, Overbearing, Rude, Thoughtless.

Aries women, like their male counterparts, are warriors at heart. When the going gets tough, these dynamos get going! Look at the classic archetypal Aries women such as Maya Angelou, Celine Dion, Bette Davis, Victoria Beckham, Gloria Steinem, and Diana Ross, to name but a successful kick-ass few!

The colours red and white look glorious on these strong characters. They wear diamonds like nobody else can do and they usually buy them for themselves! Being ruled by the head, Aries women look amazing with head ornamentation, such as scarves, elegant chapeaus, feathers, bows, bands – anything that draws attention to their gorgeous, strong and expressive faces.

Here is how I would dress you! Some images I chose from Pinterest.

EnJOY,

Hugs,
Patricia xxx

LIFE IS A CABARET!

As we age, sometimes life feels more like an uphill battle, than a Cabaret. It takes determination and imagination to see past the sadness and losses of life. I have employed several methods to keep me buoyant. Prayer and Play are my greatest allies because these are things I can do for myself. It is a little precarious relying on others to make you happy. The buck begins with you.

I love dressing up, playing a part, and swopping my normal personality for one who is far more interesting and exotic. What is normal anyway? I haven’t worked that one out yet lol! I also enjoy decorating my home and welcoming in the changing seasons. It keeps the energy of the home flowing.

Halloween is one of my favourite holidays. It is Fiesta time for the Pisces performer in me! Besides, the end of October is a powerful time astrologically speaking. How do you express your individuality? Do you like to dress up? Decorate your home? Move things around? Keep the energy flowing? Love to hear!

14732343_10154088885043437_7948578193695825142_nI have several colourful wigs, red, purple, blonde, brunette – what fun!!

19894617_10154820822448437_8600529268681638285_nDiner en Blanc is an annual event which was launched in Paris in 1988 by Francois Pasquier and his close friends. It has now become a worldwide phenomenon. I look forward to it every year. What a great excuse to dress up. But it has to be white – all white!! And it is tres elegant!

10355017_10208651618831465_2266964680942538148_nSt. Patrick’s Day! What a fabulous excuse to dress up. But it has to be green! Like the fields of Ireland, I have forty shades of green in my wardrobe!

45050156_10155959009578437_4860376539105067008_nThis past Halloween, I opted for a silver blue wig. Lulu liked it too!

10599318_10152378716613437_599975234349592699_nMy first Halloween in my current home. This basket has become a welcome sight for visiting children!

VIVA ESPANA!

54388239_10156251360678437_6768528717992951808_n

When I lived in Ireland, regular visits to Spain were on my happy calendar. Unlike Canada, it was easy to get to, and the weather a lot warmer. To celebrate our March birthdays this year, daughter Alison and I decided to go to sunny Spain. The last time I was there, I was 30 years younger, and the only thing on my wish list was to tan myself silly on a beach by day, and disco dance the night away to Sylvia’s Y Viva Espana! Go to youtube and check it out!!

This time it was different. I wanted creature comforts, culture, and great cuisine. Two out of three ain’t bad. We scored on the creature comforts and culture. Alas, cuisine left some room for improvement! We enjoyed a great Moroccan feast one night (at Al-Yamal in Malaga), and an Indian dinner another night, which was excellent. The BEST paella was actually in Dublin — at a Spanish restaurant of course! (Salamanca)

Ali, being a seasoned traveller, suggested we stay at the Mariposa Hotel in Malaga, Southern Spain. It was perfectly located in the Centro area, a 4 star hotel, close to Malaga Cathedral, and right in the middle of all the action. The bedrooms are painted in vibrant colours — blue, green, red, orange, etc. Ornate Picasso-like sculptures graced the lobby and reception areas. As luck would have it, we were put into the blue room. Fortunately, we didn’t get the blues while in residence there. An enormous comfortable king size bed ensured we got a great night’s sleep each night, and the spacious en-suite bathroom delivered my wish for creature comforts.

Hotel Mariposa had the BEST breakfast ever! For 11 euros per person, you could eat as much as you wanted. The buffet breakfast went on until after 11 each morning and you needed the time lol! You got to squeeze your own oranges and make the most delicious juice. Southern Spain has oranges dripping from the trees. No shortage of Vitamin C. There were several selections of fresh juices, sweet and salty cereals, followed by hot food such as Spanish omelettes, scrambled eggs (which, surprisingly for buffet food, actually tasted like eggs!), bacon, sausages, fried peppers and mushrooms. For those wishing to eat less savagely, you could have yogurt, fresh fruit, ham and cheese slices, etc. You got to make your own toast if you wanted, and your own espresso, cappuccinos, or lattes, which were totally delicious!

A tray of small delicious pastries and various artisan breads completed the feast. That meal kept us going until evening, with a little cappuccino break in-between. The breakfast room had large floor to ceiling windows overlooking the busy street and was a bright and cheery start to our Spanish day. Going to bed at night, I would look forward to my big, bright, sunny, Spanish breakfast. During our stay at Mariposa, there was a writer’s group from California also staying in the hotel. Ali and I got a kick eavesdropping on their literary conversations!

We started our holiday doing what every smart traveller does — the hop on-hop off bus. Ours covered two days, and all the major attractions, which included the Picasso Museum, the Russian Museum of Art, and the fashion and automobile museum which was absolutely incredible. With my love for fashion, it was one of the highlights of my trip! The castle had incredible views, but not a lot to see inside. The modern museum was certainly worth a visit too.

I love visiting churches in foreign countries, so Malaga Cathedral did not disappoint. It was truly magnificent with its vaulted domes and stunningly beautiful religious artifacts. Centuries of prayer were ingrained in the wooden seats and pews. Situated right in the heart of the city, it’s worth a visit.

One of my favourite things to do on holidays is just to walk around a new city, dig in the city vibes, wander into small random cafes where tourists don’t normally go and observe local people going about their day. Ali and I did a lot of that and enjoyed each new adventure into the unknown, the strange, and sometimes the quirky! Window shopping is another favourite pastime. That’s where the quirky part comes in!

The fashion shops were pretty much the same as those in Dublin or London, boasting big box stores such as Zara, H & M, Massimo Dutti, Mango, etc. Spanish women are meticulous about their hair and shoes. They also love their silk scarves. My abiding memory of the Spanish Senoritas is thick lustrous hair, expensive shoes, and vibrant silk scarves. I actually returned with a few scarves which I purchased from the Fashion Museum. I met the charming owner of the Museum who told me I looked 12 years younger than my age, so I bought his book, and some scarves from his museum! Charm will get you everywhere!

Spanish families go out together at night and sit in cafes, observing life, and chatting together. It’s all very civilized. Everybody, from the grandparents to the smallest babies. So sweet to see the oldest and youngest members of families hanging out together. The city square in Cordoba was a perfect place to observe the Spanish at play, eat your olives, and lazily sip your sangria. Children joyfully following bubbles made by a busker in the square, others feeding the birds. Picture-perfect, which is what you want on holidays.

Taking the train from Malaga to Granada was an ‘experience’. One has to go through security and then find the correct carriage. Easier said than done, as the trains are enormous and people are rather highly strung. Private carriages are manned by stylishly attired staff wearing gloves who don’t like to be photographed. Way too Plebian darling! We accidently boarded the private carriage (right seat number, wrong carriage) but were soon put right by an awfully posh Spanish man, boasting an enormous moustache which could house a mouse. Unlike most Spaniards we encountered, he could actually speak English. Maybe it was because we were sitting in his seat.

I would highly recommend learning some Spanish before you go to Spain. It was an impediment trying to negotiate with the Spaniards. Everything from telling them No gracias! I don’t like cinnamon on top of my cappuccino, to asking them where the nearest toilet was. On occasion, I was almost driven to the point of playing charades to show them what I was trying to say!! So, yes, brush up on your Spanish. Spanglish did not work for me!

If you asked me what the three cultural highlights of my trip were, I would have to say, the Alhambra Palace in Granada, the Mosque Cathedral of Cordoba, and the Fashion and Autobmobile Museum. All are definitely worth a visit! The Hop on Hop off is also definitely worth the investment, and you gain free entry into several museums with it. So Bon Voyage off to Sunny Spain!

FACES OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY DUBLIN 2019

53738145_10156243248598437_7221965298948112384_nGrowing up in Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day was one of my favourite days. It was a national holiday so we got the day off from school. Hurrah for that! It was a ‘Holy Day’ as we used to say, so we all headed to church, proudly wearing our St. Patrick’s day badges and any bit of green clothing we had. Some folk had great big bunches of real-deal shamrock on their lapels. We’d sing the Hail Glorious St. Patrick hymn with gusto and my mind would be wandering to my birthday party later that day. Since my birthday was so near St. Patrick’s Day, I usually celebrated it on the 17th. My Delisha day!

Gorgeous golden daffodils were out in full bloom, and so cheery to gaze upon. Some had little orange faces. Orange and yellow together is about as happy as it gets! Spring sunshine warmed our faces, and with the thought of summer not so far away, everybody was happy happy happy. Such a glorious time of year!

This year, I thought it would be fun to celebrate the day in Dublin. It was my first time being back in Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day since I left 25 years ago! How things had changed. Once upon a long time ago, it was all about the Parade. This year, I didn’t see much of the Parade because I wasn’t up in time to secure a spot. But, much to my sweet surprise, the fun all happened after the marching bands had finished their proudly parades.53930220_10156247281693437_1420764551472742400_n

All day long, Dublin was Alive Alive O with the sounds of laughter and happy smiling faces. I didn’t see one sour face in the crowds of sweet joyful people. Even the doggies with their green tutus had smiles on their faces and happy wagging tails! The sense of fun, unbridled joy, and perfect hope all around brought me back to those fields of golden daffodils from my childhood. And the sweet anticipation of a party to come…

I never in my life saw so much green! Seriously. Fellows wearing green suits covered with shamrocks, red wigs everywhere. Girls with black Guinness dresses and white blonde wigs posed as pints of Guinness! It took me a while to get that one. The creativity and effort expended in the costumes was something I will never forget!

Spending St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin is going to be an Annual fixture in my diary! If you want a day of unbridled fun Dublin is the place to be!

SPREAD THE LOVE…

8840ea9c3bb23a09d9a9f81a53f56485--soul-quotes-quotes-love

Like many people, I have been deeply saddened by the tragic shooting in Las Vegas on October 1st which claimed the lives of 59 innocent people. Hundreds of injured are still battling for life in hospitals, families are mourning the loss of loved ones, children are crying for mothers and fathers they will never see again. It is just so dang SAD. Heartbreaking…

I write about Joie de Vivre and how to enjoy your life. Las Vegas was one of my favourite cities for just having a good time. And now…

How do people pick themselves up after such a tragic loss? How does one come to terms with the fact that EVIL really does exist? Demonic possession is clearly common these days. These were all questions posed in church recently and made me think. This past year has been difficult for a great many people, and I know from the tragedies in London, Barcelona, and now Las Vegas, that Chrismas 2017 is going to be a sad one for many. But thank God, people are resilient — more than they may even realize.

I have a few suggestions to help activate your resilience and increase your Joie de Vivre.

LOVE LOVE LOVE… Shower the people you love with love and pray for the families of deceased loved ones that God will give them strength, resilience, and courage to move on with their lives.

Perform random acts of kindness to strangers so they will see that despite the evil, good does exist. Love is stronger than hate. Heroes are all around. Be one!

Love your life. Do fun things, listen to music that uplifts you, watch movies that inspire you, read books that transport you, wear clothes that make you feel happy. Colour your world with beauty. Value your friendships. Keep living your life with gusto, passion, and most especially HOPE.

Forgive. Bitterness contaminates the vessel which contains it.

Help the downtrodden. Giving to those less fortunate, whether it’s your time or financial aid, is always a good idea.

Pray. Prayer is always a great source of comfort. I surrender myself to God and ask him to Take Care of Everything!’ It’s nice to be able to dump your worries and concerns on God’s soothing lap. It truly does help, and God is very generous!

Go Spread the LOVE!

Hugs,
Patricia xxx
